“Alaska is an ocean of wilderness with islands of humanity.” ~Our motor coach driver, Doug.

After seeing the pipeline, we saw the Gold Dedge #8. Felix Pedro discovered gold in 1902 and triggered the Alaska gold rush, which put Fairbanks on the map.

Barry and I both panned for gold and “found” $4.00 worth! Our tour guide gave a prize for highest and lowest but we didn’t win! 😅 Next, we enjoyed a hot lunch with delicious stew & salad. Then boarded a real riverboat.

Cruised down the Chena River on the Riverboat Discovery, chatted with a pilot and then stopped at the home/dog center of the late Susan Butcher, 4 time winner of the Iditarod. Chatted with her husband.

Dog sled races usually have 14 dogs. They need to be 2.5 yrs old before dogs can race. Don’t train until over 2yrs old that’s when they’re fully grown Cost to keep about $1000/dog/year. Usually more$$$. Idiarod $4,000 entry fee. Charter plane to come home. Therefore, it cost about $60,000 per year to race in the Iditarod.

Next, we visited an Athabascan village, where we were treated to demonstrations of salmon curing, authentic native dress, and typical housing types from the past.

We also enjoyed on Princess, breakfast at our Lodge and a group dinner of crab legs and brisket! All in all, a memorable day on our travel journey! Please be sure to comment!
