Cairns Australia Day 35 2/23/2023 Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is pronounced “cans.” Snorkeling excursions today in the Great Barrier Reef. That’s a check mark on my bucket list. Sweet!

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. As the world’s largest reef system, it’s composed of over 2,900 individual reefs & 900 islands stretching over 1,600 miles.

I don’t have an underwater camera, so all underwater pictures are NOT mine. Everyone had to wear thin spandex like wetsuits because of jellyfish stings, even snorkelers like me! Oh goodie, I love appearing in public with no makeup, trying on spandex jumpsuits in front of strangers! 😳🙄😬 I mean fellow cruise passengers! This was not in the brochure😅😅😅 …It’s all good as we were all in the same boat, literally!

Barry didn’t go in the water. He doesn’t swim in the ocean. I didn’t go in at first because it started raining, then pouring. It was a light rain and several snorkelers were out there, so I decided to give it a go. I’m glad I did. The ocean water was about 90 degrees, warmer than the wind and rain. A few times the rain got in my snorkel. I saw a variety of coral, jellyfish, fish, and it was so cool. The coral was about 7 feet below me. All of a sudden there were two little jellyfish swimming right below my chest coming towards my face! I didn’t get stung. Just startled. Other people saw giant calms, parrot fish, sting rays, etc. One gal saw a small shark.

  3. Glad you’re having a good time. It’s been very cold and rainy here in normally sunny Southern California. Yesterday it snowed at the bottom of the aerial Tram in Palm Springs and also lots of snow in Palmdale and Yucaipa.

Sounds like fun. I love snorkeling reefs but would hate putting on a wet suit in front of all.

    1. Yes! But in reality no one is even paying attention as everyone else was also trying to put theirs on too! All while contending with the choppy water making it difficult to keep one’s balance! Yes, the fun never stops! 🙄😅😉

Nice pictures. 90 degree water, with water that warm rain isn’t even noticed. Glad you got in and had the opportunity to experience the Great Bearer Reef.

    1. Yes, it was warmer in the ocean than standing in the rain! Oh so glad I was able to do it. It was one of the things I was looking forward to most. On my next blog post I was able to add some better photos of Cains snorkeling. Check it out!
