Princess Cruises changed our itinerary from Venice to Ravenna. This is not an April fool’s joke. The change occurred well before the cruise began. Cruise ships are currently not allowed to enter the canal into Venice. I have been to Venice twice before, so it’s not a problem. I’m on vacation, it’s all good!
The Basilica di San Vitale dates from the mid-6th century. It contains some of the finest Byazantine mosaics in the Western world.
Our guide, Clara, was very good. She explained the mosaic’s meanings and told us other stories. It made for a very enjoyable experience.
Mosaic flooring. Some portions are original and are roped off. There’s also a sinner’s walk. It starts near where the guide’s is standing. One follows the arrows. Of course, the sinner has to “walk” on his knees!
This is another building, the Tomb of Galla Placidia, the Roman Empress. Completed A.D. 430 Breathtaking mosaics. Too bad she was never buried there!
Next, we walked through the town’s narrow streets to a market place building. Little shops downstairs and a tasting setup for us upstairs. Wine, cheese, salami, and mortadella among other things. Yum!
Next, we walked through the town and enjoyed a little bit of Italy! Seeing friends along the way.
